  • Visiting the Dzata Ruins and Museum, the Venda legends and interesting history of this very proud and colourful African tribe is brought to life by the relaying of actual stories and legends linked to the artefacts displayed there.
  • Stopping at mountain viewpoint offers breathtaking views of scenic beauty of Venda and the Soutpansberg and Tshivhase Tea Plantation.
  • Venturing further into Venda we visit Lake Fundudzi which is probably the most sacred site in Venda culture. It has always been related to the spirit world with a legendary large white python God living below the surface of the water and sometimes you can hear the Tshikona sing, although no one appears to be present. It is the home of the mythical python and white crocodile.
  • Surrounding Lake Fundudzi is the Thathe Vondo forest, the ‘Holy Forest’, with ancient trees and mountain ferns where all the great Venda Kings are said to be buried. Hence it is believed to be so full of spirits that few Venda people venture into it, but we do.
  • The Tshatshingo Potholes are a must see, here the waters of the Mutale River fall into a naturally formed pothole and disappear for some distance before reappearing and continuing on its course. In this beautiful natural setting with waterfalls, river streams and forests we enjoy a picnic lunch.
  • To get an insight into the life of Venda people and their culture we are welcomed at a Venda cultural village

  • Our first visit will be at a Venda Art and Craft museum “The dancing Fish” at Madi a Thava.
  • A visit to Elim market to experience vibrant rural life of the Venda and Tsonga people: taxi busses arrive and leave for rural villages; there is a bustling fruit and vegetable market, a hair dresser, local eating places and many other fascinating places to explore.
  • Leaving Elim we head out to Twananani Textiles, where women make stunning batiks with traditional patterns, bead work and embroidery.
  • John Baloy’s rural art gallery is the next port of call. John was a famous wood carver who passed away by a car accident some years ago. His gallery is still in place and houses his artwork and sculptures from other wood carvers in the area.
  • From there it is on to another wood carver, Thomas Kubayi, who makes traditional music instruments such as drums and mariba, as well as carving traditional and contemporary sculptures. At his workshop, Thomas also teaches young people woodcarving skills. This is also the ideal spot to stop we enjoy a picnic lunch.
  • We then visit the Mashamba potters, which is a huge workshop where 50 women make traditional Venda pots. All of these pots are naturally fired.
  • Depending on time and interest you can include Hlamarisa Vuma who is well known for her bead work; David Murathi a woodcarver; Noria Mbasa; or Johannes Maswanganyi and sons who are Tsonga woodcarvers with a completely different style to the Venda.

Day 3    

After breakfast we head over the Soutpansberg Mountains on the 4×4 ‘Mamba’s pass’ which presents breathtaking scenery, and the opportunity to see remote Venda life.

  • Mangwela Camp, is an ideal place to enjoy a picnic lunch as it is a scenically beautiful area with 7 different waterfalls.
  • With a circumference of 43 meters and its branches covering an area of half a football field, the Big Tree, the world’s oldest and largest Baobab tree, estimated at 3000 years and is our next stop.
  • To heal any ailments you might have we visit the ‘holy tree’. Well Venda legend has it, that after touching the tree all diseases will be cured.
  • Dinner around the fire, weather permitting

Day 4

After breakfast we head out for the day. We meet with our guide who will take us to visit some of the well-known craftsmen in the area who are famous worldwide for their high standards in arts and crafts. The Venda and Tsonga culture is steeped in the spirit world and finds expression in their woodcarvings, pottery and the decoration of their buildings.

  • From there it is on to another wood carver, Thomas Kubayi, who makes traditional music instruments such as drums and mariba, as well as carving traditional and contemporary sculptures. At his workshop, Thomas also teaches young people woodcarving skills. This is also the ideal spot to stop for a light lunch as there is a good chance that you will be treated to youngsters in the village making music.
  • We then visit the Mashamba potters, which is a huge workshop where 50 women make traditional Venda pots and more contemporary pots. All of these pots are naturally fired.
  • Depending on time and interest you can include Hlamarisa Vuma who is well known for her bead work; David Murathi a woodcarver; Noria Mbasa; or Johannes Maswanganyi and sons who are Tsonga woodcarvers with a completely different style to the Venda.
  • Dinner is served at Mashovhela Lodge.

7 night Venda Culture, Heritage & Botanical Tours with Morning Sun Splendour Program

Day 1

  • Check-in at Mashovhela Lodge early afternoon
  • Stretch your legs on a short unguided walk to our baobab tree
  • At 16;00 prepare yourself for a Scenic Sundowner drive where our guide will drive you on top of our Soutpansberg Mountain plateau to indulge in the panoramic view of our Morning Sun Nature reserve which presents breath-taking scenery

The evening is full of the sound of drumming and traditional song as local Venda dancers entertain you with an array of different Venda cultural dances to honour the chef for the creative and delicious dinner about to be served at the Drumbeat Restaurant.

Day 2

  • After breakfast a relaxing 4 hour morning walk to the large waterfall on our Morning Sun Reserve, allows you to take in the beauty of indigenous forests, rock pools and streams whilst being informed about the nature surrounding you. The walk also includes a packed Picnic lunch while you enjoy the sounds of the water at our Mashovhela rock pool, the second most sacred site in Venda Culture.
  • Afternoon tea and cake can be enjoyed while relaxing around the Lodge pool/garden or go on a short walk to our small waterfall.
  • Then relax at the Lodge and enjoy your Dinner and Breakfast at the Drumbeat Restaurant.

Day 3

After breakfast your day of discovering the Venda culture . This is a FULL DAY tour including drinks and Lunch on the road.

The tour includes:

  • Visiting the Dzata Ruins and Museum, the Venda legends and interesting history of this very proud and colourful African tribe is brought to life by the relaying of actual stories and legends linked to the artefacts displayed there.
  • Stopping at mountain viewpoint offers breathtaking views of scenic beauty of Venda and the Soutpansberg and Tshivhase Tea Plantation.
  • Venturing further into Venda we visit Lake Fundudzi which is probably the most sacred site in Venda culture. It has always been related to the spirit world with a legendary large white python God living below the surface of the water and sometimes you can hear the Tshikona sing, although no one appears to be present. It is the home of the mythical python and white crocodile.
  • Surrounding Lake Fundudzi is the Thathe Vondo forest, the ‘Holy Forest’, with ancient trees and mountain ferns where all the great Venda Kings are said to be buried. Hence it is believed to be so full of spirits that few Venda people venture into it, but we do.
  • The Tshatshingo Potholes are a must see, here the waters of the Mutale River fall into a naturally formed pothole and disappear for some distance before reappearing and continuing on its course. In this beautiful natural setting with waterfalls, river streams and forests we enjoy a picnic lunch.
  • To get an insight into the life of Venda people and their culture we are welcomed at a Venda cultural village

A Lapa Dinner is served at Mashovhela around a fire (weather permitting)

Day 4

After breakfast  your mornings of discovering the Most Northern Limpopo begins. A Picnic Basket is included.

“Guided Full Day Mapungubwe & Baobab forest Tour”  

  • At 07h30 depart to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site
  • Depending on the days plan, you will stop on route at the Mesina Baobab forest Nature Reserve for a quick look around.
  • At the Mapungubwe SAN Park entrance you will be picked up by a SAN Park Guide who will take you on a tour to the famous Mapungubwe Hill where the ancient king and his families lived. Here you will enjoy the scenic view of the park.
  • Our guide will then take you to the architect-award winning Interpretation Centre where you will find out more about the ancient heritage & artefacts found in the area as well as a copy of the famous GOLDEN RHINO.
  • We will then offer a picnic- lunch in the park. An afternoon game & sight-seeing drive through the park will lead to the confluence viewpoint where the Sashe and Limpopo rivers divide the South African, Botswana and Zimbabwe borders.
  • After a snack & drink you will, depending on the day plan stop at Alldays Pub for a quick refreshing drink and then depart back to our Mashovhela Bush Lodge where you will have your Dinner.

 Day 5

After breakfast  your mornings of discovering the South of Soutpansberg area begins. A Picnic Basket is included.

“Guided Full Day Modjadji Palms forest Tour” 

  • On route you will stop at the giant Baobab treat “Sunland” which has been used as a “bar” inside the tree. This tree is close to Duiwelskloof.
  • The unique Modjadji Cycad Reserve is named after the successive rain-making queens who have inhabited the area since the 16th century, guarding the ancient cycads. 
  • Close to Modjadjikloof, the 305-ha reserve features the world’s largest concentration of a single-species cycad, also known as the ‘Modjadji palm’.Once the main diet of the prehistoric mammal-like reptiles that lived here, the Modjadji cycad (Encephalartos transvenosus) forms a unique natural forest which can be viewed in its prehistoric state thanks to its strict protection by succeeding generations of modjadji (‘rain queens’), the hereditary rulers in the area. In fact, here the visitor has the privilege of experiencing the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ atmosphere of the largest concentration of a single cycad species in the world.
  • Depart back to our Mashovhela Bush Lodge where you will have your Sundowner and Dinner.

Day 6

Day to RELAX on our Reserve

  • Go on a short walk to our small waterfall via our Baobab tree.
  • weather permitting, you have the option to spend one night for FREE, sleeping in our “Star gazing Hammock Camp
  • The best experience is to include a “Bush braai dinner” around a fire & wake up with a fresh “Bush Breakfast”  (optional for minimum of 2 Adults) Please arrange this with the reception at arrival, check-in)

 Day 7

  • After your Bush breakfast.
  • We then farewell you to check-out and depart from our Mashovhela Bush Lodge.
